Issue Feb 18-24 2026: The death on February 22, 2026, of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known in Mexico as “El Mencho” (leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación or CJNG), triggered a wave of violence marked by roadblocks, vehicle burnings, and armed incidents across multiple parts of Mexico. Jalisco was at the center of the upheavals, with spillovers into other states. Shot by Mexican Army troops in Tapalpa, his killing also sparked widespread discussion about the Mexican government’s ongoing struggle against drug cartels.
