Mexican Workers Increasingly Turning to Low-Wage Informal Labor to Make Ends Meet

Issue May 20-26 2026: Increasing levels of informal labor in Mexico are causing people to spend less, especially on basic items. According to the BBVA Mexico Financial Group, over the last three years, there has been a drop of 10% in formal labor and an increase of 10% in informal labor in Mexico. Currently, 55% of the Mexican workforce is informally employed.
