Mexican President López Obrador Called For (and Survived) His Own Recall Vote

President Andrés Manual Lopéz Obrador, known as AMLO, promised during his 2018 election campaign that he would give Mexicans the opportunity to boot him out of office in the second half of his term. On April 10, 2022, he gave them their chance. While fewer than 20% of Mexico’s citizens turned out to vote (far below the 40% participation needed to make the contest binding), those who did so overwhelmingly chose to keep him in office. While the opposition boycotted the event, and many commentators dismissed the whole effort in advance as a publicity stunt, pundits had much to say about the exercise’s significance, both good and bad.
