Marisa Letícia Lula da Silva, Former First Lady of Brazil and Founding Member of the Workers Party, Dead at Sixty-Six

Marisa Letícia, the wife of Brazil’s former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, died on February 3, 2017. She had been in intensive care since January 24 with a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm. Doctors in São Paulo at Sirio-Libanes Hospital said “an absence of blood flow in the brain” caused her death. The lower house of Congress in the capital city, Brasilia, observed a minute of silence for Marisa Letícia, who was first lady from 2003 to 2010. While her husband left office with high approval ratings and credit for Brazil’s economic boom, his image has been battered of late by the ensuing recession and corruption charges in which his wife was also indicted. Both Lula and his wife denied any wrongdoing, and their allies in the Workers Party or PT point to partisan efforts aimed at derailing another Lula presidential campaign. Marisa Letícia’s death inspired a wave of remembrance and tribute.
