LGBTQ+ Movements Look for Greater Visibility and Inclusion in Latin America

Throughout July 2021, news outlets have been covering movement toward greater respect and autonomy given to members of the LGBTQ+ community in Latin America. Pride marches in Colombia, questions about the lack of gay representation in the global soccer scene, a new anti-homophobia anthem, and a Senate vote on marriage equality in Chile all signal greater visibility of LGBTQ+ issues and a push to change cultural and societal norms to be more inclusive of diverse sexual and gender identities. Although members of the LGBTQ+ community continue to suffer injustices at the hands of the government and other citizens (a blatant example being the recently-indicted gender-based quarantine regulations in Panama), investigations into current unequal standards and movements pushing for change have the potential to improve LGBTQ+ lives in tangible ways throughout the region.
