Latin Americans React to “Latin Night” at the Oscars

Observers across the region noted with satisfaction how the 2018 Oscars had “a lot of Latin flavor.” Mexican director Guillermo del Toro won Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for his film The Shape of Water. The Pixar and Disney film Coco, inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead holiday, won Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Remember Me”). Finally, the Chilean film Una Mujer Fantástica, directed by Sebastián Lelio, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, and became an icon for the LGBTQ community. Commentators also noted the ironies generated by these films in the current climate for U.S./Latin American relations.
