Latin Americans React to the Death of Fidel Castro

On November 25, 2016 Fidel Castro died at the age of 90. The supreme leader of the Cuban Revolution, and the last of the great Cold War protagonists, he survived through the generally hostile atmosphere of eleven U.S. presidencies, weathered the collapse of the Soviet Union (his long-time benefactor), and lived to see the beginnings of rapprochement between Cuba and the U.S. The overwhelming media attention throughout the region devoted to his passing rivaled that lavished on his old friend, the writer Gabriel García Márquez, though much of it had a bitter edge, given that while he was loved by millions of Latin Americans, he was hated by millions more, from Mexico to the Southern Cone.
