Latin American Countries and Their Continuous Battle Against Hunger

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations released the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019 report. The annually issued report presented the latest estimates on food security and malnutrition at the global level. It highlighted Latin America and the Caribbean as the regions experiencing an increase in the percentage of inhabitants suffering from hunger and the downfall of their respective economies as a primary factor. South America is the home of two countries who are currently on opposing ends of the malnutrition spectrum. Colombia’s levels of hunger are the lowest in the entire region, and the percentage continues to decrease as the years progress despite experiencing an economic slowdown. However, Venezuela is a country of high risk with the number of people suffering from hunger skyrocketing. Central America is a different situation due to the percentage of undernourished people decreasing. Alongside economic problems, the region is affected by environmental issues, especially in the “corredor seco” or the dry corridor.
