Landmark Elections in Ecuador and Guatemala

Issue Aug 16-22 2023: On August 20, 2023, Ecuador and Guatemala held much anticipated and momentous elections. In Ecuador, Luisa González, a lawyer with close ties to former socialist President Rafael Correa, emerged as the frontrunner with 33% of the first-round vote. She will face off with the surprise second-place candidate, Daniel Noboa, the son of one of Ecuador’s richest men, who received 24% of the vote. In Guatemala, the leftist candidate of the Movimiento Semilla, Bernardo Arévalo de León, won the second round of the presidential election with 59% of the vote, against former first lady Sandra Torres Casanova, running for the third time representing the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza party (UNE), who obtained 36%. Political observers across the region explained what these contests mean, and how they are related.
