Keiko Fujimori’s Faltering Effort to Deny Her Loss in Peru’s Second Round Presidential Election

On June 6, 2021, Keiko Fujimori lost the presidential runoff in Peru to Pedro Castillo of Peru Libre by around 44,000 votes. This very narrow margin means that the legal exclusion of results in a handful of polling locations could throw the election to Fujimori. Therefore, she and her party, Fuerza Popular, have continued throughout the month of June to insist on “irregular” actions in areas sympathetic to Castillo, and have refused to acknowledge the results issued by Peru’s Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales (ONPE). Yet pressure is building on Fujimori, at home and abroad, to concede to Castillo. Pundits and editorialists gamed out what this all means for Peru.
