Interim President Jeanine Áñez of Bolivia Withdraws from Presidential Race

On September 17, 2020, Bolivia’s Interim President Jeanine Áñez announced that she was withdrawing her candidacy for the October presidential election. She did so calling for unity among rightwing factions against the MAS (Movimiento al Socialismo) candidate, former Economy Minister Luis Arce, who replaced former President Evo Morales as the party’s champion after Morales’ resignation, (which his supporters called a “coup”). She and other MAS critics on the Bolivian Right characterize the popularly elected MAS government as “a dictatorship.” Though the MAS has lost much support, Arce leads in the polls, and may be on track to win the presidency in the first round. Pundits had plenty of venting to do.
