Government of Daniel Ortega Moves to Silence La Prensa, Nicaragua’s Oldest Newspaper

Since May of 2021, the government of President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua has arrested almost every opposition politician who might challenge his bid for another term in office in the upcoming November 7 election. On August 13, the regime continued its repressive trajectory by raiding the offices of La Prensa, Nicaragua’s oldest newspaper, and the only one with national circulation. This was after authorities cut off its supply of paper. Police also detained its general manager, Juan Lorenzo Holmann Chamorro, charging him with customs fraud and money laundering, among other crimes. Governments and news outlets around the world condemned the moves, while editorialists pointed to the parallels in similar actions against La Prensa by Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle in the 1970s.
