The Government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela Declared Illegitimate by the European Union, the United States, Canada, and Most of its Neighbors in Latin America

On January 10, 2019, President Nicolás Maduro was inaugurated for a second term in office, after elections that were widely condemned as rigged and manipulated. The Organization of American States (OAS) voted not to recognize Maduro’s legitimacy, adopting a resolution supported by Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Canada, the United States, Paraguay, and Peru, along with ten other nations. Mexico did not support the resolution, but it did not vote against it either, choosing to abstain. Venezuela is also in the midst of an historic economic collapse. Over the last two years, an estimated 2.3 million Venezuelans have fled their nation’s hyperinflation and shortages of food and medicine. Millions more may be on the verge of leaving, given a monthly minimum wage equal to or less than five U.S. dollars. The opposition-controlled Asamblea Nacional also refused to recognize Maduro’s hold on office, and put forward the AN’s president Juan Guaidó as acting president of Venezuela. Pundits gamed out the possible scenarios.
