Former President Lula Ruled Ineligible for the Presidential Contest in Brazil

On August 31, 2018, Brazil’s Electoral Court voted to reject Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s candidacy because of his corruption conviction, upheld on appeal. Lula and his Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) are appealing both the conviction and the electoral court ruling, but the decision had been widely expected. Lula left office in January 2011 with high approval numbers, and though he has lost much support, millions of Brazilians still remember his successful efforts to pull large numbers of his compatriots out of poverty during his eight years in office. Lula is serving a 12-year-sentence for corruption and money laundering. He also faces other corruption trials. What happens now immediately became a topic of intense discussion.
