Issue Mar 18-24 2026: Latin Americans marked the fiftieth anniversary of the watershed military coup in Argentina on March 24, 1976, which deposed President María Estela “Isabel” Martínez de Perón, widow and former vice president of Juan Domingo Perón. The first ruling military “Junta,” made up of President and Army General Jorge Rafael Videla, Air Force Brigadier General Orlando R. Agosti, and Navy Admiral Emilio E. Massera, ramped up the so-called “Guerra Sucia,” or Dirty War, that had already begun under Isabel. The military governments, which ended in 1983, led to decades of struggle over memory and meaning. Commentators across the region had thoughts.
