Environmental Activist Berta Cáceres Murdered in Honduras
!!!
Berta Cáceres, the winner of the 2015 Goldman Prize for environmental activism and one of the founders of the Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras, COPINH) was killed in her home on March 3, 2016. Cáceres was a leader of the Lenca indigenous people in Honduras who had led the struggle to defend the Gualcarque River and its environment from the Agua Zarca Dam project. She and her supporters argued that the dam would curtail the water supply to the Lenca people and violate their right to live sustainably on their own land. Police initially called the incident a robbery gone bad, but no one in Honduras (or anywhere else for that matter) believes that story.
