In early July 2020, almost six years after 43 normal school students from Ayotzinapa (known as normalistas) disappeared in Iguala, Guerrero, the federal government of Mexico announced that the remains of one of them had been identified. This finding points to the collapse of the original, official account offered by the administration of former President Enrique Peña Nieto, and the generation of new theories about what happened in Guerrero in September 2014. Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero said that prosecutors have requested 46 warrants for the arrest of municipal officials in connection with the disappearance and presumed murder of 43 teaching students. What is more, the 43 normalistas are representative of a much larger problem. Official numbers indicate that more than 73,000 people have disappeared in Mexico since the 1960s. Pundits had plenty to say on the subject.
