The era of the Left’s dominance in Latin American politics may be ending. Since Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez assumed power in 1999, the region has lived what is often referred to as the Latin American “left turn.” Leftist parties have taken power or significantly increased their electoral support in much of the region. Recent political trends, however, indicate that power may be shifting back to the Right.
