Daniel Ortega Doubles Down on Persecution of the Opposition in Nicaragua

In late June 2021, Daniel Ortega continued to insist that the political opponents he had imprisoned in Nicaragua were arrested because they wanted to overthrow him in an illegal coup. The Nicaraguan president contended that they are “agents” of the United States. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) countered that the arrests are part of “a new phase of repression” in the Central American nation that began with violent repression of protests in 2018 and 2019, while the governments of Argentina and Mexico, seen as Ortega allies, moved to distance themselves from his actions. Commentators across the region (and the ideological spectrum) had plenty to say about the situation.
