Cuba achieved its worst result in the last 40 years with 11 medals. The Cuban sports authorities sent 120 athletes to the Olympic Games to compete in 19 sports, placing 18th in the ranks. In nineteen previous Olympic games, Cuba had obtained a total of 208 medals, of which 72 were gold. In Beijing in 2008, Cuba won 24 medals, and in London in 2012, 14.
