Raúl Castro’s retirement in April 2021 as first secretary of Cuba’s Communist Party marks the end of an extraordinarily long and coherent era of political power in Latin America. Raúl followed his brother, Fidel Castro, as leader of the party, and the Cuban government. The brothers Castro have ruled Cuba continuously since the Cuban Revolution of 1959. The office of first secretary passed to Miguel Díaz-Canel, who has been president of the country since 2018. Yet, beyond the leadership change, the Cuban centralized economy and democratically-challenged political system seem likely to soldier on, despite the island’s economic crisis and growing rates of popular discontent. Commentators had plenty of thoughts to offer.
