Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Evo Morales Continue to Dominate Their Political Spheres in Argentina and Bolivia

On May 18, 2019, Senator and former President of Argentina Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (known as CFK), announced that she has decided to name her former chief of staff, Alberto Fernández, as the presidential candidate for her branch of Peronismo, while she will become his vice-presidential candidate. At almost the same moment, Bolivian President Evo Morales (Bolivia’s first indigenous president) launched his campaign for a fourth term, despite constitutional complications. The first was a surprise move, while the second was long expected. Both represent a tendency of recent presidents on the Latin American Left to linger on the main political stages of their respective societies. Reactions varied.
