Corruption and COVID-19 Continue to Spread in Latin America

December 9th commemorated the International Day Against Corruption, yet the region continues to struggle with political abuse. Although this has been an ongoing issue, the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the problem. Many Latin American countries have received funds from international financial institutions and the United States to combat the virus and help their economies. Some countries in the region have increased their anti-corruption measures while others deny any wrong-doing taking place in their governments. The pandemic has hit Latin America’s economy hard, and political scientists speculate whether corruption or COVID-19 is most to blame.
