Construction of Bridge in Bahia, Brazil, Seeks to Improve Infrastructure but Threatens History and Environment of the Surrounding Area
!!!
–Researched and Written by Clara Smith—Issue Dec 01-31 2024: A new bridge is set to begin construction in the coming year, and it extends from Salvador to the island of Itaparica in the Bay of All Saints (Todos os Santos) on the Atlantic coast of Bahia, Brazil. Years of complaints have been compiled about the crossing of the bay through the current ferry system, including delays, mechanical problems, dirtiness, and rare collisions. The ferry crossing typically takes roughly 45-50 minutes, and adding the bridge will reduce crossing time to a mere 15 minutes. Once completed, it will be the second-longest bridge in Brazil, following Rio de Janeiro’s 13.29 km (8.26 mi) Niterói bridge. The project also includes the construction of roads, tunnels, viaducts, and toll plazas, with an estimated cost of around US $1.8 billion.
