Issue Sep 17-23 2025: Countries such as China and Japan boast cultural influences derived from three key sources:  Buddhism, Taoism, and the thought of Confucius. The Chinese philosopher has placed his stamp on the way their economies are managed, their politics managed, and their education systems run, since certain principles of his thought ended up becoming norms of conduct that even today are possible to discern: a special reverence for ancestors and old people, the respect for hierarchies, an emphasis on education as a key value, and an esteem for public service are essential components of Confucian philosophy.
