Conflicting Claims to Venezuela’s Presidency

Issue Jan 01-07 2025: In the first week of January 2025, Edmundo González Urrutia, standard-bearer of the Venezuelan opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD), traveled the region to demonstrate international solidarity for his claim to the Venezuelan presidency. On July 28, 2024, he competed in the presidential election against the current Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who represented the Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV). After delays and dissembling, the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) claimed that Maduro had obtained 5.1 million votes, after 80% of the votes were counted. However, the Venezuelan opposition rejected the CNE’s claims and announced that it had gathered more than 85% of the electoral records which showed González Urrutia to be the winner. Though the Maduro regime’s assertion of victory has been widely rejected around the world, it planned to plow right along to the presidential inauguration on January 10. Plenty of commentary ensued.
