Concern Growing Over Mexican Military and Police Involvement in Recent Massacres

On June 30, 2014 Mexican soldiers killed 22 civilians in the municipio of Tlatlaya, in Mexico state.  According to the official report, an armed clash erupted when troops patrolling an area near the border with the state of Guerrero came under fire from unknown assailants.  Yet that version of events fell apart when a witness came forward and journalists examined the scene and found evidence of a massacre.  The incident calls into question President Enrique Peña Nieto’s decision to follow the prior administration’s deployment of the military in the “war on drugs.”  Major Mexican news outlets called for a transparent investigation.  In the meanwhile, Mexican police in Guerrero fired on students at the Rural Normal School of Ayotzinapa.
