Latin America’s devastating encounters with the climate crisis are growing ever more frequent, with wildfires, droughts, flooding, and disappearing ecosystems. In response, both governments and small communities are taking ambitious measures to mitigate the crisis’ effects. Communities across Latin America are joining forces with scientists and nongovernmental organizations to adopt sustainable consumption practices, conserve forests, and protect native species. Although small-scale, community initiatives can avoid many of the bureaucratic obstacles that national policies face. They make use of local people and resources, often generating additional benefits, such as the protection of indigenous rights and the expansion of rural economies.
