Colombian Peace Agreement 2.0

After the low turnout of the plebiscite in October 2016 produced a razor thin margin of defeat for the Colombian peace deal with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia or FARC, the government of President Juan Manuel Santos and the guerrillas quickly hammered out a new deal. Santos, who in December was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts negotiating with the FARC, largely ignored the intransigent, but increasingly irrelevant opposition of the Colombian Right, to send a new peace accord to Colombia’s high court and congress, both of which quickly ratified it. While the agreement marks a triumph for Colombia’s pro-peace movement, observers point to the daunting challenges that lie ahead.
