Colombia Exploded in Protest After Police Were Filmed Abusing a Man in Their Custody Who Died Soon Thereafter

Beginning on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, massive protests erupted in Colombia after the death of law student Javier Ordóñez at the hands of Bogotá police. The night before, the 46-year-old father of two, who worked as a taxi driver while he was finishing a law degree, was detained by police who used a Taser to subdue him. A widely-shared video filmed by Ordóñez’s friend showed him being repeatedly shocked by police. He died later in a hospital. In protests against police brutality, Colombians took to the streets in demonstrations that turned violent, with at least thirteen people killed and many hundreds more injured. Noting parallels to the George Floyd case in the United States, pundits, editorialists, and commentators had much to say, pointing to a series of frustrating problems that also drove the protests.
