Colombia and Venezuela Renew Diplomatic Relations After Three Years of Estrangement

Venezuela and Colombia formally resumed diplomatic relations on August 28, 2022, after a three-year diplomatic rupture, with the arrival in Caracas of the Colombian ambassador Armando Benedetti, appointed by the newly elected President Gustavo Petro of Colombia. This followed an announcement by President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela that he had chosen former Foreign Minister and current director of the Centro Internacional de Inversión Productiva (CIIP), Félix Plasencia, to be Venezuela’s representative in Bogotá. The renewal of diplomatic relations, the opening of the border, and the reignition of formal economic ties was hailed as an important turning point in inter-Latin American relations, with political and economic implications that commentators were eager to explore.
