Collapse of the Official “Verdad Histórica” Narrative Concerning Mexico’s Ayotzinapa Massacre

On August 18, 2022, Mexico’s Comisión para la Verdad y Acceso a la Justicia investigating the infamous September 2014 disappearance and presumed murder of the 43 normalistas (students from the Escuela Normal Rural “Isidro Burgos” de Ayotzinapa in Guerrero) declared that the incident had been a “state crime.” Soon thereafter, former Procurador General de la República, or Attorney General, Jesús Murillo Karam was arrested. (The office of the PGR, or Attorney General, is now known as the Fiscalía General de la República or FGR). Murillo Karam, who had helped construct the official version of events (known as the “Verdad Histórica”) was charged in the disappearance and presumed murder of the students.
