Clashes Over Oil in Peru

February 10th marked a day of protest in the town of Pichanaki, located in Peru’s oil rich jungle region. Indigenous protesters assembling for autonomy over of their homeland and livelihoods were met with violence at the hands of supporters of Argentine oil company Pluspetrol, including several Peruvian government officials. In all, four government ministers were asked to resign, three of whom had been active participants in the violent response to the protests.
