Chilean Cinemateque Discovers Oldest Extant Film Ever Recorded in the Country

Issue Apr 08-14 2026: An unlabeled can recently discovered at Chile’s National Cinemateque was found to contain the oldest extant film ever shot in the country, a firefighting exercise recorded in Valparaíso in 1902, underscoring the institution’s important efforts to preserve Chile’s cinematic legacy so that, in the words of its director Marcelo Morales, “memories do not disappear.”
