The year 2019 marks the 500-year anniversary of the start of the Conquest in Mexico in 1519. On March 1, 2019, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) sent a letter to both King Felipe VI of Spain and Pope Francis requesting an apology for the grievances incurred by Mexico’s indigenous populations during the Conquest – which both the King and the Pope rejected. The controversial move by AMLO drew much criticism in both Spain and in Mexico; many questioned its efficacy as a means of remedying grievances of Mexico’s indigenous people, and whether it did more harm or good to the two countries’ diplomatic relationship.
