The Brazilian PT Defiantly Clings to Jailed Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as Its Candidate

The Brazilian Workers Party, Partido dos Trabalhadores or PT, held its national convention on Saturday, August 4, 2018. As expected, the PT nominated its jailed founder, former President Lula, as its candidate for the October 2018 presidential election. They willfully ignored the fact that since he is serving a 12-year sentence for corruption, he will likely be barred from the ballot. He and his supporters argue that the charges against him were politically motivated by the Brazilian right, with the goal of keeping him out of the election, since the left-of-center Lula is still unquestionably the “Big Dog” of Brazilian politics. Despite his conviction, polls show him with nearly double the support of all other main candidates in a first-round election. Pundits and analysts weighed in and fingers were wagged.
