Bolivia’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal Delays Election for Third Time, Opposition Parties Attempt to Disqualify MAS

On July 23, 2020, Bolivia’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) postponed the country’s presidential election—for the third time. After postponing the election scheduled for May 3 due to public health concerns, interim president Jeanine Añez rescheduled elections for September 6, citing political pressure to hold elections as soon as possible despite the pandemic. (Añez, previously the vice president of the Senate, had taken power after the disputed election of November 2019, which resulted in three weeks of civil protests, military and police violence, and the forced exile and resignation of former President Evo Morales of the Movimiento al Socialismo party or MAS). The TSE has announced that elections will now be held October 18, again citing COVID-19 concerns for the delay.
