Bolivian President Evo Morales claims that the controversial campaign promises made to “achieve 100% voting in Morochata were misinterpreted.”
According to PáginaSIETE of La Paz, Article 119 of the Ley de Régimen Electoral states that propaganda that implies the “offering of money or a prebend of any kind” is prohibited. Yerko Núñez, head of the Democratic Unity Senate, spoke out against the president, claiming he “committed an electoral crime.” Víctor Borda, President of the Chamber of Deputies, believes that Morales did not commit a crime, and that campaign promises are just a part of electoral politics.
In La Razón of La Paz, Paulo Cuiza wrote that deputies Wilson Santamaría and Rafael Quispe filed a complaint against Morales before the Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE), believing that he flagrantly violated the Ley de Régimen Electoral in a public act. In addition to these actions, activists and members of local citizens’ organizations held a sit-in in front of the TSE facilities to protest the president’s conduct and demand the resignation of all parties involved.
