–Written by Will EganIssue Jan 10-16 2024: Despite various attempts over the past five months to derail his inauguration, including a last-minute effort to prevent the transfer of power, Bernardo Arévalo was sworn in as the new Guatemalan president early Monday morning, January 15th. While his confirmation allowed many Guatemalans, fearful of the country’s gradual return to authoritarianism, to breathe a sigh of relief, the president-elect will continue to face defiance from his opposition on the road ahead. In the coming months, Arévalo must earn additional political capital, something he will need in order to deliver on his promise to fight corruption and transform state institutions in the long term.
