Another Political Meltdown in Peru

!!!

Issue Dec 01-31 2022: On December 7, 2022, Peruvian President Pedro Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress (which was trying -for a third time- to remove him from office). He also declared that he was creating a provisional government, instituting a nation-wide curfew, and would rule by decree while he waited for new elections and the formation of an assembly to write a new constitution. Congress responded by removing him from office and arresting him for attempting to carry out a coup, for sedition, and for high treason. He was replaced by First Vice President Dina Boluarte, who immediately faced protests over Castillo’s removal and detention. Since 2017, Peru has had three Congresses and six presidents, including Ms. Boluarte. Commentators around the region had plenty to say about the situation and its implications as it evolved throughout December.
