A New President and a New Direction for Honduras

On January 27, 2022, Xiomara Castro took the oath of office as the first woman president of Honduras in a ceremony at Tegucigalpa’s National Stadium. Castro, wife of deposed former President Manuel Zelaya, said that “starting today, the people rule in Honduras.” The left-leaning leader of the Libertad y Refundación Party noted in a Twitter post that “12 years of struggle and 12 years of resistance” had passed since Zelaya was overthrown by a coup d’état in 2009. Pundits noted that she inherits a country in crisis, but many of them recognized how she offers hope, and brings plenty of political savvy.
