Issue Jan 28-Feb 03 2026: The Nobel Prize-winning Colombian writer Gabriel García Marquez once succinctly defined the paradox of Latin America and the Caribbean: on the one hand, it is isolated and misunderstood by the rest of the world, and on the other, it yearns for its vitality and identity to be acknowledged and valued on their own terms. The double-edged conundrum that García Márquez identified has resonated for over a hundred years in the region: inhabited by 650 million people, covering 15% of the earth’s landmass, and with an incomparable biodiversity, the region is an indispensable source of potential solutions to large global challenges, including food security, energy transition, ecosystem conservation, and the fight against climate change.
