On Sunday, March 1, 2020, Luis Lacalle Pou took the oath of office as president of Uruguay, demonstrating the business-as-usual nature of Uruguayan democracy. His incoming right-wing coalition and his Partido Nacional (PN) will replace the outgoing center-left government of the Frente Amplio, which has held the presidency for the last three terms. President Lacalle Pou will be accompanied for the next five years by the first woman to hold the office of vice president, Beatriz Argimón. After squeaking out a very narrow victory in the second-round presidential election in 2019 with an unruly coalition of five right-wing parties, Lacalle faces political challenges at home and expectations abroad, given his success in shifting Uruguay into the right-wing column of the regional political sphere.
