Twenty-Six Public Schools in Costa Rica Lack Modern Toilets

Issue Sep 23-29 2026: According to new data from Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Education School Census, 26 of the country’s public schools reported having substandard toilet systems located in outhouses. Of these schools, twelve belong to the Regional Directorate of Sulá, which services centers in the Indigenous territories of Talamanca and Limón, while six more are located in Turrialba.
