Issue Sep 16-22 2026: Since the United States abducted and imprisoned Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026, acting President Delcy Rodríguez has tried to find a path forward with Donald Trump, who shows more interest in Venezuelan oil than in Venezuelan democracy. Largely pushed to the side, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been ignored by the United States and not allowed to return to Venezuela. In recent weeks, the Venezuelan government has seemingly relaxed controls on the flow of information and promised to hold elections, though with no firm date set.
