Chile’s 9/11 under Kast

Issue Sep 09-15 2026: On September 11, 2026, Chile marked the 53rd Anniversary of the 1973 coup by Augusto Pinochet against the elected government of Salvador Allende without an official event for the first time since the nation’s return to democracy. The government of President José Antonio Kast broke with the tradition of institutional ceremonies marking (and lamenting) the start of the military dictatorship. The absence of an official statement came amidst renewed debate (on the right, anyway) over the legacy of Augusto Pinochet’s regime, and Kast’s clear sympathy for the event. Commentators had plenty to say.
