Issue Apr 08-14 2026: On Sunday, April 12, 2026, Peruvians went to the polls for their general election. They were looking to choose the 10th president in ten years, but more than 50,000 voters were unable to cast their ballots due to logistical failures, so voting was extended to Monday, April 13. What is more, the same unicameral Congress that many observers blame for the lack of political progress in recent years had mandated the establishment of a Senate, which Peruvians also had to populate in the context of acute political fragmentation. In the presidential contest, they had to sort out 35 candidates, a record in the country’s electoral history, though Keiko Fujimori was the only one who could be confident of a spot in the runoff.
