Chile Needs Less Ideological Extremism and More Realism

Issue Feb 11-17 2026: While Chile’s President-elect José Antonio Kast has warned about the dangers represented by a culture dominated by “isms,” from extremist environmentalism to ideological feminism to radical indigenism, and the country’s former President Gabriel Boric has argued that fighting against such “isms” means resisting cultural change, a reality check is in order when it comes to the environment. Chile has endured 15 consecutive seasons of serious drought, has just lost 21 lives, 34,000 hectares, and 4,100 homes in the Biobío wildfires. The important question is not whether these “isms” are good or bad, but whether they can be looked at in a sober way to seek pragmatic and realistic solutions to the problems.
