Issue Jan 07-13 2026: It took more than 26 years of negotiation for the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union to be approved by the European Council. After being signed by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Paraguay, it will then go to the European Parliament for ratification and to the legislatures of the four countries that make up Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay).
