Costa Rica Ranks Worse on Global Organized Crime Index Due to Increase in Illicit Commerce

Issue Dec 01-31 2025: Increased levels of illicit commerce and other activities linked to organized crime caused Costa Rica to rank worse on the World Index of Organized Crime, a report compiled by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime. Specifically, the Central American nation rose from number 72 in 2023 to number 58 among the 191 countries evaluated in 2025.
